8/7/2009 - DENVER -- The Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Denver site, will conduct a Commemoration of Service ceremony Sept. 1 at the Buckley Air Force Base Annex.

The ceremony will include guest speakers Robert F. Hale, Undersecretary of Defense (Comptroller) and Chief Financial Officer; Audrey Davis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Operations, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Financial Management and Comptroller for the U.S. Air Force; and Teresa McKay, director of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

The Denver site, part of a network of sites located in the United States and overseas, has been responsible for providing financial management services in support of the Department of Defense. The site is scheduled for closure as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure mandate and will close on March 31, 2010.

DFAS was created in 1991 when the accounting and financial functions of the military services and Defense agencies were consolidated into a new agency. Before becoming a part of DFAS, the Denver center was known as the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center and before that the Air Force Finance Center.

Throughout its history, DFAS Denver has continued to provide the Air Force with superior service, as well as financial support to other military services, Defense agencies, military retirees and annuitants. The closure of DFAS Denver brings to an end a 59 year history of accounting and finance support to the Department of Defense from Denver.

The population of DFAS Denver has significantly declined over the past four years resulting from the workload movement to other DFAS locations driven by the BRAC mandate and agency transformation initiatives. Today, DFAS Denver includes 500 federal civilian employees, military personnel and contractors.

Event details:

Date: September 1, 2009
Location: Buckley Annex, Building 444, 6760 E. Irvington Place, Denver, CO
Time: 10 a.m. until approximately 11:30 a.m.

The initial portions of the ceremony will be conducted indoors. Plans call for some outdoor activities, with arrangements in place in case of inclement weather.
