Individual Reservists (IRs) are assigned to, and support, 53 major commands, combatant commands and defense agencies. Unlike a traditional reservist, serving one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer, an IR works with the active duty unit to which they are assigned to create a training schedule based on the annual needs of that unit. An IR will often complete all of their annual training at once.
In addition to their wartime efforts, the peacetime mission of IRs is to provide backfill for active component bases. Members also provide support for relief efforts worldwide in the aftermath of disasters such as hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. |
