Due to high heat and dry conditions, Jefferson and Douglas Counties
have banned all professional firework shows for the Fourth of July Independence Day celebration. With about ten fires burning throughout Colorado, many counties have voluntarily canceled their firework shows. The normal festivities will still take place during the fourth and there is more than fireworks that allow Americans to celebrate their independence.

"By remembering that holiday's should be about spending time with family and friends. The city of Aurora is having a concert instead of Fireworks this year. Several grocery stores and department stores sell glow in the dark necklaces and bracelets that kids love. These items are a safe way to light up the fourth without fireworks," said Stephen McMillian, 460th Space Wing group safety manager.

Fourth of July is spent being thankful for what we have here in America, our freedom. The absence of fireworks should not hinder anyone's enjoyment of the day.

"Get together with family and friends and have cook-outs, go to the pools or lakes and cool off. Get out and see some of the natural wonders in the mountains of our state, plan a picnic, go on a hike or bike ride or you can beat the heat and go with your family to one of the blockbuster summer movies," said David Herman, 460th Civil Engineering Squadron assistant fire chief.

The Fourth of July has its many dangers as far as travel, consumption of alcohol, and exposure to extreme heat. Be safe on the roads and travel during normal day light hours and stop to rest at least every eight hours. Stay hydrated as much as possible and limit your alcohol intake. We need everyone back safe and sound after the holiday and at 100 percent.

"During the holiday season and anytime it is best to be proactive instead of reactive, have a plan and practice risk management." said Herman.
