Col. David M. Castaneda is the Mobilization Assistant to the Commander, 12th Air Force (Air Forces Southern), Davis- Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. As the Air Force component to U.S. Southern Command, Air Forces Southern conducts security cooperation and provides air, space, and cyberspace capabilities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Air Force Southern supports U.S. Southern Command to deter aggression, defeat threats, rapidly respond to crises and work with our allies and partner nations to build regional capacity to ensure a secure, free and prosperous Western Hemisphere.
His prior assignment was the Commander, 482d Fighter Wing, Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla. He was directly responsible for overall management of the installation, to include 28 F-16C aircraft and over 2,300 Airmen.
He was commissioned in 1993 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy. After serving on active duty, he joined the Air Force Reserve in 1999. He has served in multiple leadership positions at both headquarters and wing level.
Colonel Castaneda is a command pilot with more than 3,000 hours in the F-16 and F-35. He has more than 550 combat hours and has served in Operations Freedom Sentinel, Resolute Support, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Southern Watch, and Noble Eagle. Colonel Castaneda returned from his most recent combat deployment in May 2015.
