WASHINGTON -- The Office of the Air Force Reserve unveiled 16 portraits of Air Force Reserve leaders in the Profiles in Leadership display here last week. The display celebrates and honors Citizen Airmen’s contributions in serving the nation.
This is the second round of portraits unveiled in the Pentagon. Last year 12 portraits were unveiled.
“These profiles continue to expand the canvas that showcases the tremendous experiences that extraordinary Americans bring to the Air Force Reserve,” said Col. Bruce Bender, Air Force Reserve Command public affairs director.
This year’s exhibit features Citizen Airmen from Maj. Gen. David O’Brien, who leads Air Force research and development, acquisition, test, production and portfolio modernization programs valued in excess of $32 billion, to Senior Airman Katie Rettinger, a Rutgers graduate and private pilot who is the first “off-the-street” KC-10 Extender flight engineer in the Air Force Reserve.
Among the honorees is Senior Master Sgt. Eric Smith, who holds eight academic degrees including a doctorate. Smith, who was the 2014 Air Force First Sergeant of the Year, is a college professor, an author and the creator of a program to prepare inmates for life after incarceration.
One name among this year’s profiles is tied closely to aviation and the Air Force. Capt. John Lockheed is the fourth generation of pilots in the Lockheed family, the very same family that created the company that eventually became Lockheed Martin. Lockheed earned his pilot’s wings in 2013 and flies the C-130 Hercules with the 302nd Airlift Wing at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.
The Air Force Reserve plans to replace the portraits every year with leaders who make a significant impact to the Air Force Reserve legacy. The display is a lasting testament to the proud tradition of excellence and service by America’s Citizen Airmen.
Portraits are on display in the Pentagon on the fifth floor, A ring, 10 1/2 corridor until further notice. The individual portraits can be viewed on the Profiles in Leadership Volume II page as well.
