Parking changes afoot at ARPC

Officials at the Air Reserve Personnel Center here announced changes to the building parking plan Jan. 29.

The changes, effective Feb. 9, result in more than 100 open parking spaces for all employees who work at ARPC and other building tenants. Officials said the parking changes were necessary to coincide with the number of employees at the building.

"As the number of employees continues to decrease we realized we could consolidate space, we could minimize the number of empty spaces, and we could allow people to park as close to the building as possible," said Col. Jerry Costello, ARPC vice commander.

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service at Denver, once the building's largest tenant with more than 1,300 employees, now has less than 550. The decrease is a result of DFAS Denver being slated for closure by the Base Realignment and Closure commission in 2005.

Significant parking changes involve reducing the number of disabled parking east of the building from 91 to 53 spaces, and carpool parking from 78 to 42 spaces. Carpool parking will be moved north of its current location and northeast in relationship to the building.

ARPC facilities and security officials monitored disabled parking for the past year, performing regular vehicle counts to determine the number of spaces needed.

"This isn't something set in stone," Colonel Costello said. "If we find there is a need to expand either the number of disabled or carpool spaces, we'll do it."

The parking changes were negotiated and agreed on between ARPC officials and local employee representatives.

Other changes include the upper pad parking east of the building will be entirely open parking, and spaces west of motorcycle parking will be reserved for VIP parking. A map of the parking plan can be viewed on the ARPC Intranet.
