Thousands of Coloradans will leave their cars at home and take two wheels to work June 25. Many Air Reserve Personnel Center Airmen and civilian employees will be among those taking part in Bike to Work Day, an annual event that educates and excites people about commuting by bicycle.

"It's good exercise and right now, with the gas prices, it can save you some money," said Ken Kluza, DPA, who will bike nearly 11 miles from his home in southeast Aurora.

Why bike to work? Along with saving on gas, bike riding is exercise and can be an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

Denver has been rated as one of the nation's best places to bike by the American League of Bicyclists, and one of the most congested cities by the Texas Transportation Institute, so bicycle commuting makes sense.

Tech. Sgt. Aaron Taylor, DPA, became a cycling enthusiast after recovering from an ankle injury he suffered in a motorcycle accident nearly three years ago. He said riding a bike can be a great way to relieve stress.

"I get on my bike every chance I get," Sergeant Taylor said. "It's relaxing and challenging. You really get to push yourself."

Sergeant Taylor will ride nearly 34 miles on Bike to Work Day, to and from his home in Englewood, Colo.

Bike to Work Day is not only for experienced riders. The popularity of the statewide event means novice bicycle commuters can connect with other participants and find extra support for planning routes, and tips on best commuting practices and road safety.

Riders can also stop by one of more than 100 bike stops that morning for free breakfast, to get coupons from local sponsors, and just catch their breath.
