A new procedure is now in place to send an email reminder notice regarding the status of accrued service points to Guard and Reserve members 90 days before the close out of their retention/retirement year. This new function is designed to help members take care of annual requirements.

"We're trying to help our Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve customers stay on track for both satisfactory anniversary and fiscal years," said Les Brockman, Chief, Points Management, Air Reserve Personnel Center. "We're asking them to just go out there and check their points 90 days prior to the closeout of their anniversary year, for two reasons. One, to make sure all the points they think they earned are, in fact, recorded in milPDS, and (second) to make sure any duty they think they may have to schedule (gets scheduled)."

Members within their 90 day-window can take this opportunity to request all point corrections or complete required time for a good year. Point summaries are viewable in virtual Military Personnel Flight, and an online service for points corrections is available in virtual Personnel Center for Guard and Reserve.

"Bottom line is for them to get qualifying years for a non-regular retirement," said Brockman. Unlike active duty members who achieve 20 years and receive a standard 50% retirement, a non-regular retirement is based on active and inactive points accumulation and satisfactory years of service. "It's always easier to take care of things when you're within the anniversary year rather than wait until the year's closed out, you're outside of it, looking back, trying to correct things."

Members are encouraged to keep careful track of all orders and annual requirements during their career in case of loss or if units fail to properly log information in the proper systems.

"It's no big deal for us, but it causes extra work for them," said Brockman.
