"I was absolutely surprised when I found out about being selected as the AFRC's nominee for the Reserve Officers Association Spotlight," said Davis. "If I got something it's because of others... It's not about me."

For Tech. Sgt. John Davis, helping others and giving his best in all that he does is natural for him. He says it's engrained in him, not something he has to think about.

Even though it's just a way of life to Davis, his actions stand out to the ROA. The ROA recognized the 911th Security Forces Squadron fire team leader for his inspiring contributions at their national gala in Washington, D.C., March 17.

The ROA STARS Foundation Gala is held annually to celebrate the dedicated service of Reservists and honor those who have gone beyond public service through extraordinary contributions to national security.

Three reservists will be recognized as Reserve Sentry Spotlight recipients; one from each military department. Davis has been selected to represent the Air Force as its Reserve Sentry Spotlight nominee.

The recognition goes to serving reservists who embody the true values of the citizen warrior in both their military and civilian lives. The honor is open to Reservists of every rank and service.

According to the ROA, Spotlight recipients display courage, dedication, determination, and a desire to improve their community; they inspire others to be more and do more.

Davis is an active member of his community, giving back where he can to both his local civilian community and military community.  He participates in various volunteer projects and non-profit organizations, many of which support veterans.

"I just do what I'm supposed to do, live by the Air Force core values, and help people who need help," said Davis. "I don't seek recognition."

When he is not serving his community or his nation, Davis is in the pursuit of self-improvement. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in organizational leadership, maintaining a marathon-level fitness condition, and continually working to increase his SF working knowledge.

Both while in uniform and out, Davis leads by example. Whether in the role of a fire team leader or as a juvenile probation officer, his civilian position, Davis seeks to mentor and assist others with their mental and physical well-being.

"I am extremely proud of his selection, but not surprised," said Capt. Randall Gernhardt, 911th SFS commander. "Tech. Sgt. Davis is a true representative of the NCO ranks. He sets the example for all Airmen to follow and strives to be the best representative of the Air Force in all aspects of life."

"Reserve service comes with a unique blend of military and civilian responsibilities," said Col. Jeffrey A. Van Dootingh, 911th Airlift Wing commander. "I am extremely proud to have a member from Pittsburgh recognized nationally for inspiring others to be more and do more in both their military and civilian life."
