Command gearing up for first-ever AFROTC special selection board Published Sept. 14, 2016 By Bo Joyner Air Force Reserve Command Public Affairs ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Air Force Reserve Command officials are gearing up for the command’s first-ever undergraduate flying training selection board for Air Force ROTC cadets wanting assignments to its non-training flying units after commissioning. The selection board is slated for the third week in October and is for cadets commissioning in calendar year 2018 requesting consideration. The intent of this new program is to “identify volunteers for AFR Selected Reserve assignments prior to any Regular Air Force categorization,” according to a recent memorandum sent to all AFROTC region and detachment commanders. “By transitioning to the Reserve Categorization Process early, the Air Force will provide AFROTC cadets service options that complement their personal and professional goals and avoid the need to consider cadets to be released after Regular Air Force classification through the Air Force Personnel Center.”Cadets selected for Reserve assignments will receive a Selected Reserve service commitment equivalent to what would have been their active duty service commitment for completing the AFROTC program. Anyone selected to attend undergraduate flying training must agree to serve in a full-time status for up to six years. After completion of undergraduate flying training and 140-day mission training in an active-duty status, members selected for this program are slated to serve as Air Reserve Technicians for up to four years in order to fulfill the remainder of their full-time commitment. The remainder of any reserve service commitment for undergraduate flying training will be served in a part-time traditional reservist capacity unless the member volunteers for and is selected for a full-time active guard/reserve or ART position.Cadets can seek a sponsorship from one of the Air Force Reserve’s 36 non-training flying units or apply as an unsponsored applicant. Unsponsored applicants must be willing to accept an assignment to any Reserve flying unit. Flying units may select unsponsored applicants at any time between the selection board and UFT assignment night. Any remaining unsponsored applicants will be assigned based on the needs of the Air Force Reserve.Cadets have until Sept. 30 to apply for rated Air Force specialty code consideration. All UFT applications must include a targeted resume, field training performance reports (or letter of evaluation from the detachment commander if field training was deferred, an Air Force Form 215, Aircrew Training Candidate Summary, and an AFROTC Form 53, Cadet Assignment Preference Worksheet. For more information, cadets should contact their AFROTC detachment commander.
